My LINK experience has now drawn to a close, however I am richer for it. Throughout these three weeks I have been able to put my learning to work in ways that are not possible in even Animas High School and in a manner that is not available at most other high schools. I have been given the opportunity to use skills such as public speaking, proofreading, writing, and Excel, and I have learned how these skills could affect me in my post-school life.
Writing in general is something I enjoy, however, this internship helped me realize that there is another type of writing; one I was not used to before now; a form where I cannot put my own personal opinion and views into the work I am creating. This is the form of writing is what is found in well-written newspaper articles. It also showed me that the rules of grammar are more flexible than the typical school environment teaches you. My mentor taught me that the grammar of a newspaper is different that that used in the more day-to-day writings and in school assignments. She also told me that most other professional writing careers also have they’re own grammatical rules as well. In this manner, my internship, in addition to showing me how to use the skill’s I’d already gained though school in the real world, also taught me these very important new skills as well.
LINK has helped prepare me for my future. Because of this internship, I now know how to use a skill I enjoy in the real world and know that I can succeed in doing this. The internship has helped me know for certain that I want to continue my study of writing in the future and that has helped me narrow down my colleges, will help me get accepted to those colleges, and will help me get a job in the future.
