Mi Poma Calavera |
Mi CalacaProject Description This project allowed us to experience El Día de los Muertos, The Day of the Dead. In this project, first we made Calacas, statues of dead relatives, or pets. Some students also chose to do a painting instead. The Calacas were made with paper mache, wrapped around a wire outline. We then coated them in glue and painted the sculptures. When we had finished this, we began our Poma Calaveras, poems about the deceased family members. To do this we used a template provided by our teacher and then added to it based on our own creativity. The result was the poem to the left. After we had finished this, we completed our exhibition.

Mi reflexión de trabajo
This project challenged me. I am not a particularly artistic person, so for me creating my calaca was difficult, but through this difficulty, I felt that I was able to get closer to my dog. This project taught me about el Día de los Muertos, and showed me that, at least in spanish culture, death should be a time to celebrate those who have died rather than mourn them and be sad. It gave me a new outlook on death. The exhibition, however was not very good. The area was set up well, but was too small for the exhibition to be enjoyable. There were too many people and not enough space. If I could do this project again, I the one thing that I would have done differently would be to take better care of my Calaca. I had dropped it once or twice and thus it was cracked for my exhibition. I am proudest of my poma calavera. In previous years when I had tried to learn a language, I learned a total of two words. Being able to write an entire poem in another language is a proud accomplishment for me.
