Throughout this first week I've learned many things. I've earned how to stamp and address envelops efficiently. I've learned how to create a crossword. I've learned how to write effective interview questions.
I also learned that when you're a part of a small newspaper you must wear many hats so to speak. My mentor for example is the founder of the telegraph, but she is also the head editor, one of the writers, a part-time layout designer, and the deliverer of said newspapers in the historic downtown area.
During this time of intense learning, I came across a few surprises. I was surprised when I learned about news briefs for instance. I never knew before that sometimes organizations such as Local First can write some basic information that they want people to know about and send it into a paper for revision and publishing. I was also surprised when I found out that there’s an online generator where you can plug in words and hints and it gives you a crossword puzzle.
Overall, throughout the bumps and hazards and despite the lack of preparedness on my mentor’s part on my first day; I enjoyed my first week as an intern at the Telegraph and I can't wait to see what adventures and mishaps next week will bring.
